Lets be clear, by definition ALL soap is “lye soap”. If it wasn’t made using lye... it isn’t soap. It's a detergent. Lye is essential in the making of soap. During the process of changing the oils into soap, saponification, the lye is used up completely in the finished product. This is the reason for such a long curing process, cause this process doesn’t happen overnight. It is during the saponification process that natural glycerin is created, one of the greatest benefits of lye soap. While most commercial soap manufacturers remove much, if not all of the glycerin from their products, Sugar Mountain retains All of the natural glycerin produced during the soap making process. Just another reason why our soaps are so good for you, and SOOOO good for your skin.
It's true, there are products that perform similar to soap, but are not soap they are detergents. For example dish detergent is not soap, products like body wash and shower gels are not soaps. Even shampoos are not soaps (well except for ours). There are many products that are labeled as “soap” but are not by definition soap. Take for instance “liquid hand soap” usually do not contain any soap. It’s possible to make a liquid soap by substituting potassium hydroxide for the sodium hydroxide, and there are liquid soaps on the market that are truly soap, but they are few and very far between. We have been in the process of developing a liquid hand soap for almost a year now, but just haven't got the right mix yet. (Yes we are strict about this kind of thing. It's not easy or everyone would be doing it.)
We have to get away from the mind set cheaper soap is better soap. Commercial soap manufacturers have found ways to reduce the cost of soap by adding detergents and other additives. While detergents are great cleaners around the house, they are not that great for your skin. They remove natural oils from the skin and may cause your skin to be dry and itchy. These cheaper soaps are the reason, for the most part your skin is so aggravated in the first place. Its a great business model if you stop and think about it for the large soap company's. Cause the problem in the first place, then sell the consumer a temporary solution that problem.
